I have had a blog on this site for a good 6 months now and I just struggle with it. I have a lot of things I want to say and a lot of things I would like to do here but I spend so much time over thinking what I am going to write on here. I think once I get a few of these out there that things will flow easier.

A little bit about me..

My name is Kevin Wirth, I grew up in Macedonia, OH and lived in the area until I turned 18 and decided to enroll into college at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh (AIP). College had a great affect on my life more than I ever thought it would have. I was helping my best friend of 10 something years move to Pittsburgh because he had received a scholarship to AIP for his impressive artwork that he did while in high school. While touring the school I had made mention to someone in their staff that I was interested in their Industrial Design program and WHAM I was in a chair discussing things with them and before you know it calling my Mom in Ohio and running it by her.

When I had reviewed the degrees offer by AIP earlier that summer I was immediately drawn to the Industrial Design. It was a perfect fit for me, creativity, problem solving, drawing and you can’t argue with walking into a store and being able to say “Hey see that other there, I designed that”. So I started the following quarter, did the whole moving away from my Mom and the only home I ever knew to pursue my future.

Lucky for me, the dorm Jason had moved into had an opening for another student so I talked to housing and 1-2-3 I was moving in. The feeling of starting a new chapter of my life in a new city with my best friend was the coolest thing I could think of at the time. It’s funny when you look back on things how different they are from a far. When I was in school I didn’t have a job nor did my friend so we were always short on money. Largely due to the fact that we had very little money management skills. What I am getting at is this, we were completely broke and busting our butts to walk 1.5 miles to and from school almost everyday through scorching hot summers and freezing winters. You don’t know cold until your walking over the 6th Street bridge in a hooded sweatshirt and the wind is just tearing through you. I find it easy to complain about what we did and didn’t have but I love those times because we will always remember it and laugh at how much it sucked.

I could tell you stories and stories from observing the homeless, being in a haunted house, broken windshields etc but this isn’t the place for now. What I can tell you is school was a LOT of hard work, lots of sleepless nights and meeting new people. It will be 2 years this month that I graduated and although the job market around Pittsburgh hasn’t been the most responsive to a new ID grad, I refuse to give up and to continue to develop my skills and search for new opportunity.

So maybe writing my first blog wasn’t as difficult as I thought. My advice to those struggling with their first blog is what Mark Twain said “Write what you know.” Thank you to the ones who take the time to read this. I plan on using this blog to share design tutorials, experiences and anything else I feel you might enjoy. I look forward to my next entry, hopefully it won’t take me another 6 months to get it onto here.
